Butterfly Garden's story is a lighthearted reinterpretation of European and Scandinavian folk art. The designs I am currently concentrating on are influenced by some of my favorite Elizabethan embroideries, the same embroideries that inspired the Willow quilt. I am enthralled by these historic textiles. Their elegance and naive optimism appeal greatly to me. Of course, they will be laden with flowers and butterflies and, perhaps, some other insecty creatures. This month we debut three new quiltstwo Butterfly Garden fabric quilts and a new quilt I call "Garden of Shadows". The Butterfly Garden quilts (Giant Butterfly and Butterfly Redux) are, true to their source fabric, colorful, playful and have a contemporary feel. Garden of Shadows could be considered the ying to those two quilts' yang. Chiefly monochromatic, it represents a direction I have been thinking about for a while now. Click on each of the three quilts to read more about all of them and be sure to check out the fabric kits for the two new Butterfly Garden quilts. Thank you so much for your continued support and enthusiasm. It means much to me to know that what we are doing resonates with people no matter where they live. Magazine Appearances... As mentioned above, Jane is featured in the January 2005 issue of Designers Quarters. The issue features a pattern for the Giant Butterfly Quilt as well as pictures and a profile of Jane at work. We have copies of the magazine available in the store. Our friend Jean Bailey has notified that the American Patchwork & Quilting specialty magazine Quilts and More 2005 will feature a tote bag she designed using Jane's Freckled Lily and Diamonds and Dots fabric. The result is a very pretty bag. Thanks, Jean, for including us! From Concept to Quilt... FreeSpirit Fabric and Hancock's of Paducah are sponsoring the above-titled exhibit at the Museum of the American Quilter's Society in Paducah, Kentucky. The exhibit chronicles several examples of the initial fabric designer's imagination, the production process of the fabric and the creation of quilts using the fabric. The exhibit uses both Jane's and FreeSpirit's Butterfly Garden and Exotic Garden lines as examples of the process as well as quilts and fabric from Bettina Havig and Amy Butler. The show runs from March 5 to May 8, 2005 at the Museum of the American Quilters Society. For more information, please call the museum at 270-442-8856 or you may visit their web site at www.quiltmuseum.org
New links... Nationally known bead artist, author and teacher Robin Atkins has updated her web site. If you are a beader, love beads or feel you might be indifferent to beading, take a look at her wonderful site. Robin shows many examples of her wonderful work as well as a treasure of information and history of beading. Her site also includes a store featuring prints, jewelry and more. You can visit her site at RobinAtkins.com Pam Stahl emailed us a while back and told us about a new web site she started called RealWomenQuilt.com. Pam describes is at a hodge-podge of articles, tips, humor, encouragement, etc. It's a very cute site and this version has a nice interview with quilter Liuxin Newman. Last edition's added links... If you haven't guessed by now, Jane is keenly interested in the British and American variations of the Arts & Crafts movement of the turn of the 20th Century. Last edition, we featured Oscar Wilde in the Inspiration Center and this month we dwell on William Morris. In addition, we have added some new links to online resources for those interested in reading further on this endlessly fascinating subject. The Arts & Crafts Society has a lovely web site dedicated to the philosophy and spirit of the Arts & Craft Movement. There's much to view, including and events calender, and archive of resources, interactive forums and a marketplace. You can find site at www.arts-crafts.com. Gustav Stickley, the designer who is know as the father of the Mission Style, also published a periodical called "The Craftsman, " devoted to expounding the philosophy of the Arts & Crafts Movement in America. Dalton's American Decorative Arts web site has thoughtfully reprinted several articles found in the original magazine printed from October 1901 to December 1916. You can find a list of the reprints at www.daltons.com/archive.html. Our friend Terrie Hancock Mangat has a delightful new web site featuring her multimedia quilt making, painting and textile design. Terrie also has a playful new line of fabric for FreeSpirit called "Fiesta." Visit Terrie at www.terriestudio.com.
